Panicked, Susanna watched in real time as Calvin, Nunez, and Baker were shot into the void. Their life-signs detectors, integrated into the power armor, kept working along with the tactical link. It provided a solid homing ping that the Magen locked onto. She forced herself to take a deep breath, though an involuntary squeal left her lips after the mining ship blew apart.

Colonel Demood says to always work the problem. Susanna bit her lip and forced her brain back into the mode of a professional CDF soldier. This is just another problem. She turned to one of the comms ratings next to her. “Contact the bridge. See if they have any rescue craft on ready five.”

He nodded before picking up a commlink interface. A few moments later, he shook his head. “Negative, Corporal.”

Susanna let out a sigh. An oversight that could cost us dearly. What other assets are in range? She scanned the sensor board, hoping a Zeivlot patrol ship was on a suitable vector. Some of them had rescue teams aboard because of the dangerous nature of mining asteroids. She had no such luck, however. None of them could reach the stricken Marines in time, and Susanna worried they would either lose contact or develop severe issues at any moment. No CDF armor tech could survive what those suits had gone through without taking damage.

Work the problem. Nothing else was in range, no magic bullet to deploy at the last second. Unless… Susanna’s hands flew over her input device, and she locked on to the CSV Salinan, which was in orbit of Zavlot but crucially outside the Lawrence limit. She toggled the command emergency override channel and prayed it would go through as she requested a vidlink with the commanding officer. Lord, please let this work. Please. I can’t have sent them to their deaths.
